SGVCC offers a clear pathway from a child’s first choir experience to advanced concert performance. Age ranges are a guide; placement is based on vocal readiness, musicianship, and the ensemble where each singer can grow with confidence.

Apprentice Choir singersAges 4–7

Apprentice Choir

Choir time: 1:00–2:00 PM

A welcoming first choir experience for young singers. Children build a healthy singing voice, learn to match pitch and rhythm, follow a conductor, read basic music, and sing confidently as part of a team. No audition is required.

Intermediate Choir singersAges 7–10

Intermediate Choir

Choir time: 1:00–2:30 PM

Developing singers strengthen posture, breathing, tone, music-reading, sight-singing, and listening skills. The ensemble introduces part-singing while helping children become more independent and expressive performers.

Pre-Concert Choir A singersPlacement required

Pre-Concert Choir A

Vocal training: 2:00–2:30 PM Choir time: 2:30–3:30 PM

Designed for singers who are ready to move beyond beginning-level repertoire. Students develop vocal technique, two-part singing, sight-reading, score awareness, and confidence performing music in different languages and styles.

Pre-Concert Choir B singersPlacement required

Pre-Concert Choir B

Vocal training: 2:00–2:30 PM Choir time: 2:30–4:00 PM

For singers prepared for a longer rehearsal and greater musical independence. Students strengthen vocal technique, harmony, sight-reading, score preparation, and expressive performance through increasingly challenging repertoire.

Concert Choir singersAges 9+ · Audition

Concert Choir

Vocal training: 2:00–2:30 PM Choir time: 2:30–4:00 PM

An auditioned ensemble for experienced singers ready for advanced repertoire. Choristers sing independently in three- and four-part harmony, refine sight-reading and score study, and grow in artistry, discipline, and musical leadership.

Chamber Choir singersAdvanced placement

Chamber Choir

Choir time: 2:00–4:00 PM

SGVCC’s most advanced ensemble for select singers. Chamber Choir performs sophisticated mixed-voice repertoire and develops a high level of musical independence, artistry, and ensemble leadership. Strong preparation, attendance at required events, and regular home practice are expected.

Hand Bell Choir singersPlacement required

Hand Bell Choir

A collaborative instrumental ensemble where students learn handbell technique, rhythmic accuracy, music reading, and attentive teamwork. Each ringer contributes an essential part to the complete musical line, building focus, coordination, and ensemble responsibility.

Boys Choir singersAges 10–18

Boys Choir

Vocal training: 2:00–2:30 PM Choir time: 2:30–3:30 PM

A supportive vocal program for boys with unchanged or changing voices. Singers build healthy technique, pitch accuracy, rhythm, music literacy, musical independence, and confidence in a positive ensemble environment.

Jennifer Taing

Jennifer Taing

Apprentice, Pre-Concert A & Boys Choir Conductor

An SGVCC alumna, Jennifer Taing brings experience in choral music, piano, vocal performance, music theory, and teaching solfège to young singers. A homeschooling mother of three, she is passionate about helping children grow in musicianship, confidence, and a lifelong appreciation for music.

Sze Wing (Sindy) Ho

Sze Wing (Sindy) Ho

Intermediate, Pre-Concert B & Concert Conductor

Dr. Ho holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Sacred Music from USC, with additional studies in choral music, organ performance, and music theory. She is an experienced children’s choir conductor, church musician, piano instructor, and adjunct professor of Christian Worship.

Samuel Lin

Samuel Lin

Music Director, Chamber Conductor & Vocal Coach

Samuel Lin studied vocal performance at the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and earned a master’s degree in conducting from Cal State LA’s Roger Wagner Center of Choral Studies. He has led choirs at international festivals and competitions and frequently serves as a choral clinician and adjudicator.

Individual vocal development

CM Vocal Coaching

SGVCC supports singers preparing for the Music Teachers’ Association of California Certificate of Merit® Voice program. Students receive individual coaching in vocal technique, musicianship, repertoire preparation, and performance.

  • Structured preparation for the annual CM evaluation
  • Opportunities to pursue State Honors and advanced levels
